Forests and forestry activities provide an opportunity to address the pressing challenge of climate change through sustainable production. Forests also play a strategic role in mitigating critical issues, including biodiversity conservation, water regulation, energy efficiency, pollution reduction and mitigation, production of raw biological materials, food safety, and human and ecosystem health and poverty.
The ForestDSS Community of Practice has been actively involved in the scientific program of the IUFRO world congress 2019 in Curitiba, Brazil. The technical session named “Decision support approaches for Forestry of the 21st Century” has been organized by members of the ForestDSS CoP. 13 oral presentations have been presented in two slots, and every presenter had time to present and discuss the results. The aim of the session was to show which solutions are proposed to deal with the complex decision environment in forest management under the ongoing climate and social changes. In this context the forest multi-functionality and the sustainable provision of forest ecosystem services were discussed. The following conclusions were drawn in the discussion:
• There is a strong need to consider different ecosystem services in the design of DSS and provide tools that support multi-functional forest management.
• The big challenge is how to design approaches, models and methods in the frame of disturbed and degraded forests.
• another big challenge for decision support systems is the need to integrate the risks and uncertainties involved in climate change and its consequences in the long term planning .
• The members of the Community of Practice on Forest Decision Support Systems (www.forestdss.org) should continue to share their expertise in applying models, methods, techniques and frameworks for developing and applying DSSs to provide lessons learned.

EURO (the Association of European Operational Research Societies) and its Working Group on Decision Support Systems (EWG-DSS) invites you to participate in the ICDSST 2020 6th International Conference on Decision Support System Technology on “Cognitive Decision Support Systems and Technologies” in the city of Zaragoza, Spain. The Conference will be hosted at the University of Zaragoza, during the period of May 27th to May 29th, 2020.
For 2022, the coordination board decided to have an Open Call for EWG-DSS members that are interested in hosting ICDSST 2022 and act as the general chairs of the conference.
This year’s AgriFuture Day, taking place 1 day before the EU-Africa Forum https://www.eu2018.at, will bring together senior executives and experts from science and economy concerning rural management, technology providers, and leading financial service providers, to discuss the latest challenges and developments making an impact on planning and management of the agro-forest-environment sector globally, topically with focus on Europe and Africa.
