Open position for As­sist­ant pro­fessor / As­so­ci­ate pro­fessor / Pro­fessor in forest resource planning

The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR IN FOREST RESOURCES PLANNING

starting from 1.9.2019 or as agreed. The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent full professorship or a fixed-term associate / assistant professorship (tenure track) depending on their qualifications and career stage.

The professorship is based at the Department of Forest Sciences. Current research related to forest resource planning and management is multidisciplinary with wide national collaboration with Aalto University, University of Oulu, University of Turku, University of Eastern Finland, Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), Finnish Environment Institute and National Land Survey of Finland. International research collaboration is also extensive with some 30 research organisations. The Department is a part of the Centre of Excellence in Laser Scanning Research (CoE-LaSR), funded by Academy of Finland (http://laserscanning.fi/). In the Center of Excellence, forest research focusses on digital infrastructures and Precision Forestry. The Department also participates in the activities of the Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE), Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) and Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR). The tenure track or full professorship in forest resources planning covers central research and teaching fields in forest resources sciences with the purpose of maintaining ecosystem services and supporting a transition to a bio-economy.

The main tasks of the Assistant Professor / Associate Professor / Professor in Forest Resources Planning will include carrying out high quality scientific research, research-based teaching, and societal interaction. In addition to giving lectures and courses, the appointee will supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and participate in the development of Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programs at the Department and Faculty. Demonstrated excellence and scientific leadership in the field of forest resource planning is a requirement.

The appointee is expected to carry out high-level research in some of the following research fields: development of methods for multi-purpose forest planning, updating forest resource information, assessment of significance and uncertainty of forest planning information, simulations and optimizations of forest plans and scenarios, methods for forest management planning at different temporal and spatial scales, and decision making in various forest ownership and social settings, methods to utilize digital data and digitalization in updating of management plans and monitoring of forest practices.
