Report on Forest Managers Perceptions about Forest Ecosystem Services

As we navigate the complexities of a changing climate, it is becoming increasingly clear that the success of European forest management depends on more than just ecological data. It depends on the people on the ground—the forest managers who make daily decisions about the future of our landscapes. The latest OptFor-EU report “Forest Managers’ Perceptions on Forest Ecosystem Services“, explores this “human dimension” by diving into the perceptions and motivations of forest managers across four distinct European regions. One of the report’s most significant contributions is the identification of three distinct “manager profiles” that shape how climate adaptation happens in practice. In addition, another core takeaway is that a “one-size-fits-all” approach to climate policy simply won’t work. To be truly effective, our tools and policies must be as diverse as the managers they serve. This is where the OptFor-EU Decision Support System (DSS) comes in. By understanding these different profiles, the DSS can offer tailored pathways: providing advanced AI-driven scenarios for the Adopters, regulatory navigation support for the Constrained, and tangible “no-regret” entry points for the Procrastinators. Ultimately, building a resilient, low-carbon future for Europe’s forests requires a supportive policy environment that rewards stewardship and provides the flexibility needed to respond to an unpredictable climate. By bridging the gap between science and the personal perceptions of those who manage our lands, we can ensure that climate-smart forestry becomes a reality for everyone.
